RECAP:
Wow, a full slate of games and the twilighters played a full 7 innings (1 played 8 innings!) What a blast!
The only bad news of the night were some minor injuries on Holy Apostles, Maranatha Assembly of God and Willow Creek McHenry County. Pray for these players (and Pastor Mike of Maranatha).
EQUIPMENT AUDITS:
Managers are sill arriving at the fields short the approved list of mandatory items. We will be conducting spot audits for the remainder of the season. Violators will not be fined, but they will feel guilty. :-)
RULE CLARIFICATION:
Slaughter is 13 run lead at the END of innings 4,5 and 6. If home team reaches 13 run lead BEFORE 3rd out, game ends BEFORE 3rd out. If visiting team reaches 13 run lead, home team gets 3 outs to close gap, tie game or take the lead and play continues.
Q: Can I 'borrow' a player to field a team?
A: The league has an unwritten rule that you can 'borrow' a player from another team if you have 8 players. If you only have 7, you cannot borrow 2 players, you forfeit. You cannot borrow any players for tournament play. Also, rostered players may NOT float over and play on another team at will. Only if the other team has 8 players can a rostered player from another team go and play on another team.
Q: What about the Shamrock ground rules. Do they cover the sidewalk from the parking lot to the jungle gym area?
A: Yes! (I will clarify the wording in the online rules page.)
FIELD CONDITIONS:
Sunday night, there were makeup games at the Township. After wards, I inspected all 4 fields and they were all in great shape. Then, early Monday morning, I was awakened by the sound of a rain shower. As you know, when we arrived Monday evening, we were greeted with some puddles that needed to be taken care of.
Normally the township takes care of that, but with Frank out on honeymoon, something happened and we were stuck with it. In the future, BOTH 6:30 teams should band together to get the fields prepped so that games are underway at 6:30. Standing around and waiting for someone to do it will probably mean your game not starting on time. For twilight fields especially, this is bad.
ALL-STAR GAME AND LEAGUE PICNIC NEWS:
Please start promoting this July 18th 4PM start date and time for this grand event. This later start time should allow Saturday workers to more readily attend this event. Regular season trophies will be presented. We'll have a home run derby with trophy for the champ (open to ALL players and coaches, even non-all star players). (The batter may use ANY metal or wood bat and we use an extra hard softball). The highlight of the evening is of course, the All-star game.
This year, due to expansion, each team will be limited to 2 all-stars, one male and one female. Teams are free to decide by acclimation or vote who their all-star representatives are. Once selected, it is IMPORTANT to e-mail me their name. We'll introduce EACH all-star onto the field during the ceremony and present them an award certificate, suitable for framing. Please insure the all-star selection is able to
attend this game. If they cannot, choose someone else please.
This year we will mix things up since on paper, we will have an equal ratio of male and female players. We will have a 'Ladies First' inning with ALL ladies in the field and lineup for the first inning. From there on out, we'll have the men and ladies playing. Lineup from inning 2 onward will be girl-boy throughout and all all-stars will be in the batting order for the remainder of the game.
Managers are reminded that EACH team is responsible for bringing their own self contained picnic, food, drinks (NO ALCOHOL), sun shelters, grills, etc.
Managers are also reminded that your presence at the All-star game is very much anticipated and needed. To add to the atmosphere, all managers will be assigned umpiring duties. We will have six umpires for this 9 inning exhibition. So we'll rotate managers in for a few innings and then switch. So bring your vest!
Tentative All-star game umpiring duties;
Home Plate: Doug Peterson, John Amandes, Mike Orlando, Dave Miller,
1st Base: Brian Claypool, Tiffany Umbarger, Greg Zuleger, Steve Brown
2nd Base: Gary Demarchi, Blane Barnett, Bill Halstead, Brian Safstrom
3rd Base: Bill Disch, Ben Denen, Mark Santner, Chris Para
Left Field Line: Scott Richardson, Geoff Olsen, Bret Taylor, Dan Paulsen
Right Field Line: Paul Schwegel, Kary Olsen, Amy Birkoff, Albert Thennes
TOURNAMENT NEWS:
Tournament sign up will begin Monday July 6th. There will be a registration fee of $10 per team. This fee will need to be paid in full prior to the tournament schedule being put together the week of July 20th. So, here is how we are going to do this.
Platinum Tournament: Open to all teams with a record of 500 or over.
Double elimination. Registration deadline, July 20th.
Gold Tournament: Open to all teams with a record below 500. Single
elimination. Registration deadline, July 20th.
Registration will be taken at the Field 1 Backstop bulletin board area at the Township ball fields on Monday July 6th, 13th and deadline day the 20th. No verbal or written IOU's will be accepted. No pay by deadline, you will be ineligible for tournament play. We will have a person(s) there to receive your payment.
Playing dates will of course involve Monday's. I need to check with Frank on non-Monday dates. I am thinking Saturday evenings. It remains to be seen if the Platinum tourny will involve non-Monday dates. Frank is due back next Monday, so I will get with him early next week to nail down the tourny dates. Once tourny dates are announced, it is crucial you canvas your team to see if you can field a team on all nights of potential play. If you cannot, please opt out and do not register.
PLAYOFF ELIGIBILITY:
Players must have played a full 21 innings (3 full games).
Teams must have their roster on file on Church stationary.
MINI FALL LEAGUE:
For teams that choose not to play or cannot play in the tournament, we will offer a mini Fall season of around 4 games. More on that later. The mini season will not be available for teams that play in the
Tournament.
Thanks all.
