I regret to inform you of the passing of our old friend Paul Schwegel last evening at Alexian Brothers Medical Center. Paul had been discharged a week ago Thursday from RUSH Hospital and was in route to Alden Terrace in McHenry when he took a turn for the worse. He was brought unconscious to Alexian and never regained consciousness. He is now in the presence of our Lord.
Paul Schwegel was a charter member of our league and participated in it for 32 years straight with Mt. Hope United Methodist Church and retired at the end of the 2010 season. Some of you may have had some interesting experiences with Paul's umpiring in the 2009 and 2010 season. It is now clear that his difficulties then were symptomatic of then undiscovered health issues that once diagnosed last year, led to his passing last evening. Paul dearly loved the game of baseball and softball and dearly loved his tenure in the league and hanging with his team mates. He offered advise and provided some insightful comments on some of the leagues earlier history. His comments are found here; http://churchsoftball.org/history.htm A memorial service is being planned and information on it will be passed along just as soon as I have it. It would be a fitting tribute if the league managers showed up in mass at that time, even if you did not know him. I will keep you posted. In Christ, Doug Peterson
